With eyelids heavy and red,
A woman sat, in unwomanly rags,
Plying her needle and thread—

In poverty, hunger, and dirt,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch
She sang the “Song of the Shirt.”
Last night I dreamed of chickens,
there were chickens everywhere,
they were standing on my stomach,
they were nesting in my hair,
they were pecking at my pillow,
they were hopping on my head,
they were ruffling up their feathers
as they raced about my bed.

LEP loves the word noetry. How ironic is it that nothing rhymes with the word ‘poetry’?
